In an "oh-my-god-there's-so-much-news" week like this one, a few stories are bound to fly under the radar. Here's what we loved this week from the world of classical music!
1. "Bach -- with added joy." We couldn't agree more! Steven Sharp Nelson of The Piano Guys plays a perpetual favorite with a modern twist:
2. If you've turned on a radio to any station but ours lately, you've heard at least one of the tracks from Ariana Grande's latest album, "Sweetener." To commemorate its release, the pop princess is recording a one-hour BBC special featuring her most popular music, backed by an all-female orchestra. We hope it comes to PBS!
3. A Puccini aria played beautifully on a... hand saw? We're just as surprised as you.
4. BBC Radio 3 is experiementing with "slow radio" by broadcasting a symphony... of animal sounds. Listeners will hear a zoo winding down for the evening.
5. New York Times music editors asked: what are the five minutes you'd play for a friend to make them fall in love with classical music? Composers, musicians, and conductors responded, and their answers are moving and delightful.
6. Three conductors, rehearsing together, sans orchestra. It can be done:
