CD of the Week: Bach on Brass

German Brass: Bach on Brass

In original arrangements by the ensemble, German Brass performs a diverse program of pieces by the baroque composer, including concerti, oratorios, and cantatas.

Presenting a lush sound obtainable by only the most exquisite of brass ensembles, German Brass assembles a stunning program of some of Bach’s most significant works. Including the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, the Italian Concerto, and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” the ensemble further elevates the celestial quality of Bach’s works through their warm and mellifluous tone.

The photo below shows a rotary valve trumpet, the kind of instrument used most of the time in orchestras and other ensembles in Germany. In contrast to piston valved trumpets (the kind normally used in the US), rotary valve trumpets typically soften the beginnings of notes and feature a sound that blends more easily with the types of trombones used in Germany.
