CD of the Week: The PhilHarmonia Octet: Music for Wind Instruments

The PhilHarmonia Octet: Music for Wind Instruments
The PhilHarmonia Octet: Music for Wind Instruments

The Czech chamber ensemble puts a modern spin on wind pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, and Klein.

Comprised of some of the leading members of the Czech classical world, the PhilHarmonia Octet has undertaken to shed musical performances of a prescribed and predictable experience, and instead provide a more contemporary approach. Proudly referring to itself as a “New Approach Ensemble,” the mission of the group is “to enrich the Czech music scene, to widen the repertoire and move it up to an international level.”

In their newest release, the ensemble performs pieces originally written for wind octet by Mozart and Beethoven, in addition to furthering their dive into modernist waters with a divertimento by the Czech composer Gideon Klein.
